Progress with going Grey

Standard

For those of you wondering if I’m still doing it, hells ya! I’m still letting my grey come in and I’m still staining it various shades of purple, and I’m super duper lOving it!
This is me pre-coffee still in pjs and no product in my hair, this is what happens when I go to sleep with wet hair! Since most of my hair is grey I’ve started incorporating a blonde shampoo into my shampoo rotation, I personally like Lee Stafford, it makes my hair smell nice and washes out the salt and chlorine from the pool nicely!

Proud to be a Mother First

Standard

I’ve been reading a lot of articles lately about women not being proud that they are mothers, or people putting mother’s down. This baffles me, and saddens me, because I’ve learned and changed so much as a mother for the better, and better yet, I have a responsibility to raise the next generation of children. I am a teacher by education and heart so maybe I am a special case, I’m sure a few of my haters would tell you for sure that I am a special case, and to them, my response is

muahh

Reasons why I’m happy to list Mother as my most coveted skill on my resume.

  1. I can literally do anything while someone is annoying the crap out of me and do it in a calm manner, with so much self control that it shocks me at times.
  2. I have been able to retrain my brain in the span of 6 years to eat and write with my left hand, because there was a child in my right hand.
  3. I think not a few steps ahead, but literally days ahead, to stay ahead of my children and their mischievous plotting against me.
  4. I can fully function and look presentable on less than 3 hours of sleep.
  5. I can clean up an entire apartment in under 30 mins to look presentable after it looks as though it has thrown up on itself.
  6. I can also clean the entire first floor of a home with 4 rooms in 30 mins, I say this because if you come to a home with small children, don’t EVER ask to see the upstairs, because it ain’t pretty.
  7. I know how to negotiate with terrorists that I birthed and if I can convince my children to not only eat green vegetables, but ask for them in their chocolate cake, I have an immeasurable skill!
  8. I can tune out crying, which can be translated into tuning out any distractions in the real world when needing to concentrate.
  9. Being a mother has caused me to be on top of the latest trends, and safety notices and I have so much information stored in my head about so many different things it scares me.
  10. My most important skill since becoming a mother is being able to see both sides of things. I want so badly to raise a generation of boys that are different from the last, because I want this I strive to always listen to my boys and explain to them why gender stereotypes are wrong, why prejudice is wrong, why racism is wrong, why women are equal to men and so much more. I feel like this is my greatest skill, and it allows me to be open to the ideas of others but still be objective. I want my boys to express themselves freely, and when they are wrong I will correct them and tell them why. Hopefully they will in turn put that same behaviour that I model for them, into the world and make it a better place.

Aladdin Cast White Washed

Standard

The title sounds like I’m race baiting, I’m not. While I think all the actors cast as actually great actors, I have a problem with a British man, (who will inherently bring his own colonial views to this movie) Guy Ritchie, who isn’t exactly known for the diversity in his film, nor showing people of colour in a great light. If you don’t believe me please feel free to watch any and all of his movies!

I’m going to keep this short, because this casting of Mena Massoud, and Naomi Scott as the leads Will Smith as the Genie, all have one problem in common. They are all the fairest examples of their race. Mena is a light skinned Egyptian, Naomi is part British, and the other part of her is Northern Indian (most Northern Indians are mixed with British, as someone of Northern Indian descent I am mixed with British, Bulgarian and Italian via a 23 and me DNA test) and Will Smith who is very much a light skinned black man.

All of this leads to a major problem for young children who are going to watch this movie after seeing the original cartoon version. Do you know what they will first notice? That the characters are no longer dark skinned. They may not voice this, they may instead internalize it like so many children do, and that is the sad part of all it. There is a billion dollar industry of skin bleaching products, South Asian, East Asian, African, Middle Eastern and basically all people of colour are targeted by the idea that the more white your skin is the more pure you are and the better you are. Now this movie with this casting will only perpetuate this problem.

I’m sure Guy Ritchie will cast the darkest person he can find to be Jafar, but Dark Skinned people are only good enough for the roles of villians.

Aladdin History Lesson

Standard

Aladdin was originally a story within the tales that Scheherazade told a king to avoid him killing her. The Story is of Persian origin, Not Arabic, do you know why I can say that with so much certainty? Because Arabic is a language, not a bloody history or culture. Aladdin was added into the stories by a French writer Balland, and wasn’t a part of the original Arabian nights and it was based on Chinese folklore. It was supposed to have taken place during the Abbasid empire reign, that empire included parts of India, China, the Middle East and Africa and Persia. Aladdin as a story belongs to the people of the East. But all my concern is for the remake of the cartoon version.

The Reason why Indians can also feel a connection to Aladdin is due to the fact that Persian descendants ruled Indian during one of the Golden ages and intermingled and Married freely.

When Disney Made Aladdin originally it was meant to be a cartoon that catered to both the various Middle Eastern Cultres and Indian ones. The characters clothing, turbans, facial hair, noses, hair, jewelry even Agrabah is all Ambiguous between all the cultures. Come on can you honestly tell me Jasmine’s dad’s turban is based on any other turban than that of an Indian?

For reference Agra was one of the Mughals Crown Jewels in its kingdom, so for Middle Eastern People to disregard Indian people having claim to this movie’s origins is equally as silly as Indians disregarding the Middle East influences in the movie.

The Mouse was careful in playing even Stevens with the creation of the cartoon! Everything that Mouse does is calculated (not necessarily a bad thing). After having random internet arguments with foolish people on that article’s post, I decided to clear the air.

If you disbelieve me with regards to the origins of Aladdin I have actual hard copies of my Indian Ocean history classes and Muslim worlds first hand account books to help clear the air. Also my 23 and me DNA test and that of my husbands clearly show that we are mixed up with Persian/Indian/British/East Asian/Southern Italian/Native-Indigenous just between the two of us

Bottom line is that someone descending from Persians (not only Middle Eastern or Indian) should be playing the roles.

Also here is a better suited list of Asian leads:

1. Riz Ahmed – he can already sing and dance he’s a part of swet Shop Boys

2. Avan Jogia- he’s a Canadian kid who played a young king Tut and he can sing and dance via his days on a Disney show

3. Ranveer Singh – I mean he can look like a dirty rotten scoundrel when needed, he can dance and sing like Nobody’s business and he’s played an epic romantic that can literally send shivers down your spine

4. Aryan Khan – SRK’s boy spawn, I mean his father is the Badshah of Bollywood and he would be the Freshest face among since it would be his Debut role. This is my wild card choice since it is based on Rumors that he wants to get into acting.

5. Arjun Kapoor – he’s a fresher face in Bollywood but he’s proven he has acting chops and he is young enough.

6. Aditya Roy Kapoor – he for sure can act, and isn’t a typical light skinned actor. He also has a more mainstream accent which I’m sure Disney is looking for…I mean unless they really just want to cast a white person in the role.

7. Rupinder Nagra – he was heart wrenchingly beautiful in Amal, I cried, still cry every time I watch the movie.

For Jasmine:

1. Lily Singh a.k.a SuperWoman is still my top pick, she can sing and act plus she has a huge following, this seems like a no brainer.

2. Hannah Simone – I mean come on she’s perfect and would look great with Riz on screen. She currently plays Cece on new girl

3. Nazneen Contractor – she was in the reboot of Heroes and was fantastic!

4. Noureen DeWulf- because she could easily be ambiguous between Indian and MiddleEastern.

5. Kay Ray a.k.a Kiran Rai who plays the title role of Anarkali on the web series by Miss Mutta. She for sure has the chops for it and she can dance too! Homegrown talent like Lily Singh.

6. I would pick Deepika Paducone if Disney could just hire her but I know they don’t seem to want too foreign sounding of an actress…sad by true.

So to that foolish writer on Huffinton Post, next time if you don’t want to write an article or aren’t interested don’t write a half assed one and try to pass it off as something. Ask someone who knows something about the topic for help if need be but don’t publish an article on a branch of the Huff Post meant to destroy stereotypes of Asians. You literally were so uneducated on the top you just perpetuated the ignorance of the Disney casting directors, and that hurts for people who are trying so hard to make a difference and break stereotypes!

UPDATE: The same writer on HUFF POST decided to respond to criticism but not directly by posting a link to an article that Aladdin has roots in being Chinese, I guess I skipped in my post that there are and were Many Chinese people that were a part of the same empires. The link that she posted doesn’t even prove that Aladdin was Chinese it just shows that the Chinese also had their telling of the Moralistic Story of Aladdin, just like Urdu speaking storytellers and Arabic ones! Urrgh nothing makes me more angry than “journalists” posting ill thought out articles and then post Links that they think prove them correct when in actuality just display another theory, further proving her wrong!

PLEASE PLEASE remember this was a folk tale that spanned various cultures and people are getting upset by it and it’s crazy because it Aladdin NEVER really existed!

Fuel Foods Meal 3

Standard

Grilled Steak with vegetables and barley, again I started eating before I could take a picture but it was well seasoned and juicy not dry. The vegetables were crispy too and the food was delivered on Sunday so that is pretty interesting to note! Usually I hate asparagus but no complaints and I’ve come to the realization that I was eating well when cooking on my own, but damn I was eating waaaay too much before! I’ve seen a difference in the scale so I am going to keep this up for as long as I possible can!

Fuel foods meal 1

Standard

Today I began my fuel foods Journey! I’m excited as I don’t really eat breakfast I’m always hungry around lunch time and I don’t like eating my kids’ leftovers, but such is life! So I took the plunge and ordered online, and I chose the “easy plan” I called to make sure there weren’t too many tree nuts in the foods for this week and I’m super lucky on top of there being no tree nuts there was also no pesto or cilantro (I DESPISE cilantro!)

So I will attempt to blog every meal. My first meal is the heritage greens salad and my only complaint is that it wasn’t big enough! It was perfect taste wise, like a little tiny bit sweet with the blueberries but otherwise salty and tangy (I don’t eat salt at all so to me it was seasoned perfectly) the cheese added to it was just the right amount. I had it with a giant cup of unsweetened green and peppermint tea! So far good!

Here is the menu for the week and trust me I’m just wondering and confused as to what to eat for dinner! Not a bad problem to have considering my old problem!

One Pot Tuna Pasta in 30 mins

Standard

So it was 4pm the other day and I haven’t taken any protein out of my freezer and for some reason the day got away from me and my kid was like I want dinner ( he burned off a lot of energy at school that day) so I did my best pantry meal!

3 cans of tuna (I used flaked packed in water)

1 bottle of PC Marinara sauce (this sauce is very good,I use homemade when I can)

1box of pasta (I used alphabet pasta, which the kids LOVE, I guess there is something about eating your words lol)

1 bag of frozen peas

1 chunk of frozen spinach

Garlic powder, onion powder, turmeric and sea salt and red chilli flakes for taste (I don’t measure these I throw it in and then taste)

Step 1:

cook pasta and drain and set aside, simple enough right? 7-8 mins

Step 2:

In the same pot, quickly sauté Tuna, just a bit, then add peas, spinach, seasonings and tomato sauce, 3/4 of one extra jar of water, stir and  boil on medium to high (covered to avoid splashing on your black splash) for 10-20 mins stirring regularly and you are done as soon as the sauce is as think as you would like it.

Step 3:

Serve sauce over pasta and done! Oh and if you are on a low carb diet I ate mine with Shirataki noodles which are zero calories and zero carbs (you have to rinse these in cold water and then sauté them with the sauce for about 5 mins and they taste even better the next day when they have been soaking in the sauce over night)

These ones above are the shirataki noodles I use!

Toronto Police Should NOT be a part of Toronto Pride in Uniform.

Standard

I repeat myself, the Metro Toronto Police Members should not be allowed to March in Pride in their Uniform.

I say this because for as long as I can remember, the metro force has held down the black population in Toronto.

In case you didn’t know this, the Pride Parade was initially a protest against “anti gay” laws enforced with a crazy amount of force on Gay Men and Lesbian women, and various members of the LGBTQ community. They were looked at as the scum of the Earth, considered sickos because of their sexual orientation. The problem is that even though the Metro force only recently apologized for the raids on bath houses (the gay men they arrested) they didn’t extend the apology towards the lesbian and Trans women they brutally arrested.

So allowing police services to be a part of the Pride parade as LGBTQ+ members is okay, it is inclusive if they are allowed without their uniform, because it is when they are in uniform that they have brutalized various members of the LGBTQ+ community. They brutalized, lesbian women, trans members, gay men, black men and women and they have only, ONLY apologized to the Gay White Men. That’s it!

Why more people aren’t mad about this is beyond me. I cannot believe all these straight white men in Toronto city council  are so butthurt about the funding going to Pride. It is always these same old school guys, the same ones telling me that there is no such thing as appropriation, sexism, ageism etc. It’s always the same type of man that is so narrow minded, telling everyone else that they are wrong, the same guys that are saying do it our way, or else! I call BS! Today no one agreed with you, you old backwards man! Today in Toronto, the old white dude who has always had everything go his way, finally got told to sit down and shut up!
To Pride Toronto, please do your thing, include the police (without uniforms) until the Police apologize for the decades of abuse on the LGBTQ+ community, until they apologize to your Black members and acknowledge the brutality don’t let them into your pride parade! Don’t back down from the core values of Pride, until everyone is equal, your struggle isn’t over! The Police are supposed to serve and protect, and to those marginalized members who have been oppressed for so long by the same hand that is supposed to protect us is just unacceptable, so stand up! Return to your roots of protest!

Oh oh wait to those organizers of the Pride New York Parade, you people are low down dirty scum! You turn against your own community for publicity? That is the most underhanded bitchy thing you could have done! Instead of looking into the reasons why BLM wanted police banned, and how Pride Toronto began, you guys decided to invited our Metro force over to march in your parade?! Wow, what a bitchy ass mean girl wannabe move! Take that shit and get outta here!

Until people realize that the whole LGBTQ+ community should feel protected by the police and not hunted by them, they simply shouldn’t be allowed to take part in uniform. The uniform gives them power, without it, they are just like everyone else, equal! Which is key, they are no more, nor less than any other LGBTQ+ member marching. Unless they have to exert their power over others there really shouldn’t be a problem with them wearing plain clothes.

Deviated Septum Surgery

Standard

So I am less than 24 hrs out of my surgery to correct a deviated septum and to open up my nasal turbinates. Sounds weird but I’ve suffered all my life with breathing problems and when I took my son into this lovely ENT doctor (Dr. David Goldfarb) I was convinced wth his humour and how he put myself and my 6 year old at ease. My kiddo’s quick recovery and his doctor’s pride in his work just cemented the fact that I needed him to help me.

All my life I’ve suffered with breathing problems and I’m sure I broke my nose a few times as a teenager, then my son and I had a head to nose collision when he was 1 and 1/2 and my nose bled on and off for a few days, and while trying to explain to him that he needs to be more careful when I’m helping him up, he managed to do another head to nose collision! I haven’t been able to breathe correctly since, and just remembering those hits brings tears to my eyes (this might be a side effect of the surgery)

Anyway, I wish I didn’t have to wait as long as I did but I had to ensure my second son wouldn’t do the same thing to me once I got it fixed.

I tried to look everywhere to find out about the surgery, and I only got scary stories. Mine isn’t that scary so far. Not yet anyway but I will update as I go. This worst thing that I’ve noticed is that I can’t breathe through my nose which makes it hard to talk and breath at the same time and it’s hard to drink. Also huge thing I can taste sugar waaaay too much now! I wonder if this can curb my infamous sweet tooth! Bonus!
Here are pictures right after surgery, I took off the moustache bandage to clean up. There is bleeding Mixed with discharge but not too much and not overly gross. I slept really well with the painkillers and PHO I had for dinner, from 1030 to 8 straight and I slept in like a sitting position with a ton of pillows behind me and around me, I felt great! Mostly because I almost always have a kid in bed with me!

Also thank God my nose is still my Indian Nose!😊
